Nystagmus

Nystagmus is continuous and uncontrolled movement of the eyes. The movements can be in any direction so the eyes can look like they are moving from side to side, up and down or even in circles. Most people who have nystagmus will have reduced vision as a result.

There are two main types of nystagmus. One appears in the first months of life which is called early onset nystagmus or congenital nystagmus. The other develops later in life and is called acquired nystagmus. Nystagmus is believed to affect between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 2,000 people.

The Nystagmus Network is a UK charity run by individuals and families affected by nystagmus. Their aims are to support people with nystagmus and promote research into finding a cure.

Rally2Raise has supported the Nystagmus Network since the project was started in late 2011. Project founder Rachel's young son has the condition so it is a cause particularly close to her heart.
